When the Olympics Goes on Facebook

Facebook, the social network platform has teamed up with the International Olympics Committee to launch a centralised page devoted to the games.

Users can browse the official Facebook pages of athletes and teams competing in the events, which have been brought together in one handy place on the Explore home page.

People are also encouraged to ‘like’ particular pages of interest, with the information also being organically filtered into users' newsfeed.

Facebook claims London 2012 will be the first ‘Social Olympics’, with sports fans able to explore the different pages to access latest Olympic news and updates.

'We will follow the athletes’ stories for the next 17 days,' said Facebook executive Joanna Shields.

Shields added that, “it’s that discovery through friends that makes things interesting and makes you want to click on media. We want to bring discovery to the Olympics.”

Only 250 from the 10,000 athletes have currently signed up to the service, but Facebook expect this number to rise significantly following the official launch of the page.

The IOC also confirmed plans to launch dedicated Olympic Twitter and Google+ pages to further improve social interactivity during the games.
