Why Tuberculosis is Still Prevalent

Published in Health Written by Folashade Adebayo
Jide Idris
About 130 years have passed since Robert Koch, an American doctor, discovered the Tubercle Bacillus, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis. That timely discovery, has however, not translated to much gains, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The WHO says the world still records 1.7 million annual deaths to this preventable and treatable disease.   But the real culprit is the multi-drug resistant strain of tuberculosis, MDR-TB. According to experts, a patient develops MDR-TB when he does not adhere to the correct dose or length of treatment; when a wrong dose or length of time is prescribed to the patient or when the prescribed drug is of low quality. For the health care workers and the patient with MDR-TB, treatment from this point…

Keeping Lassa Fever at Bay

Published in Health Written by Folashade Adebayo
Keeping Lassa Fever at Bay
As the nation whimpers from the assault and death toll of Lassa fever, the Pest Control Association of Nigeria, PECAN, has declared that an integrated pest management approach is the only sustainable system of controlling the deadly disease.   Speaking to journalists last week, Ayo Ogunyadeka, president, PECAN, says a combination of chemical and non-chemical methods can be used to keep rodents at bay. Non-chemical methods, according to him, include cultural, biological and mechanical methods of pest control while chemical method involves the use of pesticides or rodenticides. “Rodenticides are agents that are lethal to rodents. They can be characterised as either slow acting, which is chromic in nature, or fast acting, which is acute in character. Slow acting rodenticides…

Many Wonders of Cashew Nuts

Published in Health
Jar of Cashew nuts
They may be small, but they are powerful fruits loaded with enough nutrients and healthy fat to reduce the risk of developing heart disease, protect against cancer and boost the overall longevity of human beings.   Nuts are calories dense foods, endowed with minerals especially manganese, potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, zinc and selenium. Selenium is especially a powerful antioxidant that helps neutralise harmful free radicals that can attack healthy cells and increase the risk of serious conditions like heart disease and cancer, including breast cancer.   Recent research has shown that taking a handful of cashew nuts a day in the human diet would provide enough of these minerals and prevent deficiency disease.   In view of this, scientists say…

Tackling A Rat Scourge

Published in Health Written by Folashade Adebayo
Rats like these spread lassa fever
Each year, the nonchalant attitude of government and carelessness of health care workers give Lassa fever an upper hand In disease management, cross infection is not an uncommon phenomenon. Often, an innocuous fluid from an open sore on a patient finds its way into the blood stream of caregivers, or particles from a sneezing bout can linger in the air and inhaled by anybody who comes in contact with them. That is the medical theory on the fate of eight health care workers who recently lost their lives to the Lassa fever outbreak in the country. Mohammed Pate, minister of state for health, confirmed the deaths of two doctors and six nurses.   But that will not be the first…

Nodding Disease in Uganda

Published in Health Written by Folashade Adebayo
Nodding Disease in Uganda
Brush aside the ongoing massacre caused by the notorious The Lord’s Resistance Army in northern Uganda for a while, and you will see another deadly predator ravaging the children along the borders of the Pearl of Africa. Still new and baffling to researchers, the nodding disease has reportedly killed more than 3,000 children in Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan.   For now, what scientists can pin to the strange disease are seizures, stunted growth, wasted limbs and convulsions. Starvation is another symptom dreaded by mothers in the region. The disease has reportedly prevented the children from eating or drinking. If they are forced, the seizures start. Peter Spencer, a neuro-toxicologist, says, “One or two children will start nodding very rapidly…

Fight Depression With Food

Published in Health Written by Folashade Adebayo
Fight Depression With Food
You’ve read that motivational book over and over. You’ve even listened to your favourite music but depression still hangs over you like a soaked coat. David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding, two nutrition experts on Yahoo Health, say you can get over bad mood with your choice of food. They are betting that dark chocolate, Greek yoghurt, honey and cherry tomatoes have the potential of getting energy to your brain faster than other self-help therapies.   Taking a few ounces of dark chocolate has been described as one of the best ways of giving your brain a treat. When your brain is tickled, there is very little room for depression and hangovers.  According to Zinczenko, it “gives you an instant boost…
