London 2012: Athletes to Receive Free Eye and Dental Care
Free dentistry and eye care will be provided to Olympic athletes at a specially constructed £23 million Polyclinic in the Olympic Park. The 24-hour health centre, which expects to treat 200 athletes a day, has been funded by £17 million of NHS money plus £6 million from the £9.3 billion Olympics budget. In addition to the usual sports injuries, the Polyclinic will offer free dentistry and eye care. These clinics are predicted to be the busiest, after physiotherapy, with around 120 eye tests performend a day and free glasses provided where necessary. Organisers have stressed that the medical care at the Polyclinic will be “immediate and necessary”, not treatment for pre-existing conditions, but the dentistry clinic expects to…

This interview was conducted in 2003, after Rashidi Yekini returned from his sojourn in Spain as a professional footballer. ‘No Place Like Home’ – Rashidi Yekini By JOHNSON AYANTUNJI Very few footballers at this stage think of coming back home to play. What informs your decision? I enjoy my profession. And I never give up. I enquired spiritually whether I would be able to make it. Physically, I am all right. Also, I asked my physical trainers whether I would be okay. They gave me the green light. They cited the case of so many players who are even older than me and are still playing. I now decided I should come back instead of wasting away in Europe.…

Rashidi Yekini: Exit of the King of Goals
Celebrated in his heyday, Rashidi Yekini, all-time Super Eagles highest goal scorer, departed to the great beyond without the blaze of glory that once accompanied his stellar football career “They wasted him!” exclaimed one of the neighbours when the magazine visited the sprawling residence at Oni and Sons Way, near Ring Road, Ibadan, Oyo State. It was desolate. Only the intermittent, loud, high-pitched cries from peacocks, which Rashidi Yekini kept as his last few companions after he reportedly told his human tenants and gateman to vacate his premises, could be heard inside. It wasn’t the kind of sound heard during their mating season. It was almost like a mourning cry, an eerie reminder of how one man,…

Lionel Messi: The Diamond-feet Genius
Football pundits seem to have run out of superlatives to describe Lionel Messi’s mesmerising and sublime skills, while the Argentine’s rise to the peak of world football poses many questions about Nigeria’s youth football development programme For the scandalous lack of superlatives, Stanley Okoro, a member of the silver winning Golden Eaglet team of 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted in Nigeria, was erroneously labelled Nigeria’s own ‘little Messi’ by a section of the country’s sports circle during the tournament. Fast forward three years later. While the real version has gone on to win two UEFA Champions League trophies with Barcelona, and was also named FIFA World’s Best Player three times consecutively, Okoro, who once played for Heartland…
